Block 31 Community Center Toronto

Total Square Footage 163,500
Total Structural Steel Weight 1000 Tons

This new 163,500 sq. ft. facility located in the heart of downtown Toronto includes a community center, day care, and district school areas. It also includes double gymnasium with a mezzanine running track, change rooms, multi-use areas and many more. The roof features a full basketball court, a running track and extensive green roof areas.

This project features 3-storeys that are divided into a north wing and a south wing with a pedestrian bridge connecting both sections. The choice of material was structural steel due to the reduction in weight and strength allowing for long spans and open, column-free spaces. Supporting the track there is a four-meter field bolted truss and a shallow shop welded truss providing the open space necessary for the gyms and basketball courts below. In addition, structural steel leads the construction industry with a fully integrated supply chain that has proven to reduce errors, improve safety while reducing project costs overall.
